Rebuilding Routines After a Life Change
A change in work, home, or responsibilities can make old arrangements stop working.
Let’s TalkA QUESTION WORTH EXPLORING
Start with the part that feels familiar.
A change in work, home, or responsibilities can make old arrangements stop working. Tasks that once happened automatically may become sources of friction. You can be arguing about chores while also missing a familiar sense of partnership.
The practical division of work and the emotional meaning of the change both deserve attention. A new arrangement may need explicit agreement rather than an assumption that the old one will stretch indefinitely. Therapy does not choose the right division for you.
A routine can also carry a message about being noticed or appreciated. Discussing the task alone may miss why it has become emotionally important. Couples work can make room for both the practical arrangement and that meaning, rather than assuming that solving one will automatically settle the other. An earlier arrangement can be understood without assuming it fits unchanged circumstances.

MAKING THE QUESTION SPECIFIC
A place to begin the conversation.
Pick one routine that repeatedly breaks down. What has changed in the circumstances, what is each person expecting, and what would need to be discussed before calling the arrangement fair?
Which old agreement needs to be revisited because our circumstances changed?

THE RELATED SERVICE
Couples Therapy
A major change may affect two people differently, even when both want the relationship to work. Couples therapy offers a setting for exploring the interaction between you, the expectations each person brings, and what you want to understand together. It is a different arrangement from individual therapy. Participation, fit, and whether a joint conversation is appropriate should be discussed directly rather than decided from a page on a website.

Questions can stay open.
What if the old arrangement was never stated clearly?
A routine can become an expectation through repetition rather than an explicit agreement. When circumstances change, that expectation may become visible for the first time. Couples work can explore what each person believed was agreed and what the current situation requires. The aim is a precise account, not proof that one person should have read the other's mind.
Why does a small task feel connected with the whole relationship?
The task may symbolize being considered, appreciated, or left alone with responsibility. That meaning is worth discussing separately from how the work is divided. Neither side should be assumed to explain everything. A practical change and a conversation about its emotional significance may be different parts of understanding the recurring disagreement.
